POLICIES FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICES
These policies are intended to support the safety and well-being of HomeHaven members and volunteers.
For further information or clarification, please contact the Executive Director.

SCHEDULING

We ask that all volunteer services be scheduled through the HomeHaven Office via Kate Hay, who will then log the service into HH’s database. Please cooperate with the following guidelines:

  1. Call or email Kate Hay in the HH Office to request help.
  2. Members are asked not to phone a Volunteer directly requesting visits or help.
  3. Kate will contact the list of Volunteers.
  4. An available Volunteer will contact the member to schedule the service.

LIABILITY CONCERNS

If a volunteer service is not documented in our database and some harm to person or property (or alleged or perceived harm) occurs, HH's insurance company will claim that it was not a HH activity -- it was a private arrangement between two people -- and they will not step in. This applies to all volunteer activities including Visiting, IT help, Household help, and Driving. For this reason, please be sure to have all volunteer services logged through the HomeHaven Office.

Please take note: If a member drives another member to an activity they are both going to, that is "carpooling." It is not a HomeHaven service scheduled through the Office and logged into the website. It is a private arrangement, and as such, any damage or injury would be covered by your private insurance.

VOLUNTEERS vs. TRAINED AIDES

Volunteers are advised not to get involved with medical devices (such as hearing aids) or with any form of personal care (known as ADLs  or Activities of Daily Living) such as bathing/grooming, dressing, toileting, feeding, or transferring between chair, bed, wheelchair, walker, vehicle. This sort of assistance requires a trained aide.

For the sake of everyone's safety, we ask our members not to request this type of assistance from volunteers, who are not qualified or trained to do that.

EMERGENCIES

In an emergency, CALL 911!

  1. It is unsafe for a Volunteer to drive a member to the Emergency Department. Instead, call 911.
  2. A member who is experiencing emotional or psychiatric distress should:
  • Call his/her doctor or therapist
  • Or call the local Mental Health Crisis team at 211
  • Or call the National Suicide Prevention hotline at 988
  • Or call 911 for immediate assistance
